National Archives and Records Administration National Personnel Records Center
 
How can I locate a former army soldier from the ARMY Link FAQ describes how you can have the National Personnel Records Center forward a letter for you.
 
The Air Force Historical Research Agency has their own FAQ on finding out information about those who are or have served.
 
The VA also has a FAQ on finding a Vet.
 
Military City has broken up its searchable database for active duty personnel and reserves to each of the four branches of service. You will have to register to access them.
 
Vietnam Casualties by State and City or Town has a database you can search through.
 
Search Shark has a large listing of resources.
